Eugene "Gene" Kent Jr.

Eugene M. "Gene" Kent Jr., 86, Excelsior Springs, Mo., passed away peacefully at his home July 17, 2011. Gene was the loving husband to Bette Jean Arnold Kent; they had recently celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary. Gene was born July 13, 1925, the son of Eugene M. Kent Sr. and Clela Whitehead Kent in Mexico, Mo. Gene graduated from Boonville High School in 1943. He is a World War II veteran and served on the USS Secat submarine. Gene later graduated from the University of Missouri with a degree in horticulture. He was a merchant and later retired from the Clay County Health Department. After retirement Gene had several hobbies. He loved gardening, oil painting, wood carving and turning bowls on the lathe. Gene was an active member of the Excelsior Springs United Methodist Church and several community organizations, including the Chamber of Commerce, American Legion, VFW, Lions Club, Elks Club and Muddy Mo. Sub Vets.

Gene is also survived by his daughter, Marty Kent Dauer, of St. Louis, Mo.; granddaughter, Jillian and husband, Chris Hartman, and grandson, Gabriel Dauer, both of Los Angeles, Calif.; sister, Dorothy Cook and husband, Lloyd, of Boonville, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, July 23, 2011, at the Excelsior Springs United Methodist Church, with visitation from 10 to 11:30 a.m., prior to the service. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery in Excelsior Springs. Arrangements are through Bross & Spidle Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs. The family suggests memorial contributions to Liberty Hospital Hospice or the Excelsior Springs United Methodist Church.
