Marjorie Wharton

Marjorie Wharton, 97, of Excelsior Springs, Mo., passed away Thursday, Nov. 26, 2009, at the Excelsior Springs Convalescent Center. Marjorie was born Sept. 5, 1912, in Kansas City, Kan., the daughter of Otto and Maude (Sumner) Letzig. Her family moved to a farm in rural Ray County in 1913. After graduating from Richmond High School in 1930, she attended the Kansas City Business College. During the 1930s, she worked as a field organizer for the new established Beta Sigma Phi women’s sorority, traveling in the southern United States. She married Ernest Wharton in 1938. Marjorie was a member of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, Beta Sigma Phi, Harmony Study Club and Coterie Club. She was instrumental in establishing the first kindergarten program in the Excelsior Springs School District.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; and two brothers, Herman Letzig and Welmon Letzig. Survivors include three sons and their wives, George and Jeanette Wharton, Dallas, Texas, J. David and Julia Wharton, Kansas City, Mo., and Richard and Delores Wharton, Excelsior Springs; six grandchildren, Richard Wharton and Brian Wharton, both of Dallas, Texas, Susan Bell and Janet Greaves, both of Kansas City, Stephanie Guin, Lee’s Summit, and David Wharton, Kearney; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 30, at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the services at the church. Burial in Hillcrest Cemetery in Excelsior Springs. Arrangements are through Bross & Spidle Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs. Memorial contributions may be made to Mount Calvary Lutheran Church or the Excelsior Springs Convalescent Center.
