Shawn Gabrielle Burke McEntire

Shawn Gabrielle Burke McEntire, 52, of Excelsior Springs, Mo., passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, November 27, 2013. Shawn was born August 8, 1961 in North Kansas City, Mo. to Daniel M. Burke and Barbara Burke.

She spent her early years living in Kansas City and moved to Excelsior Springs in 1972. She graduated from Excelsior Springs High School in 1978, attended the University of Missouri-Columbia and graduated from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Pharmacy in 1985. She then began a dedicated and distinguished 28 year career in managed care pharmacy.

Shawn was employed at Coventry Health Care as Vice President of Pharmacy Services where her duties included serving as the Director of Residency and Student Programs. She was also an Adjunct Professor at the University of Missouri – Kansas City School of Pharmacy. She was active in national and local professional pharmacy organizations, especially the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP), of which she was a member of the board and a number of committees. She was a member of the founding task force for the development of the Journal of Managed Care Pharmacy and has served as a Contributing Editor and Editorial Advisory Board member. Shawn also served as AMCP Treasurer and President. In 2005, Shawn was awarded status as Fellow of AMCP in recognition of her sustained excellence in the pharmacy profession and in April, 2013, AMCP conferred one of its top honors, the Distinguished Service Award, on her for exceptional service. Shawn loved her profession and her passion was teaching and supporting young students and new pharmacists.

When Shawn received the diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, she faced it as she did everything in her life, with a straight-forward attitude of grace and strength. Despite the physical challenges that came with her illness, she continued to work for many months. She surprised her three sisters with a getaway to South Carolina in May, went on a dream trip to Ireland with Mac and dear friends in August, and attended the Burke-Fromhart family reunion in Colorado in late September. She and Mac designed and oversaw a home renovation project over this past year and Shawn was especially proud of her “dream kitchen”. She taught us the true meaning of living each day to its fullest and reminded us all of the importance of telling those we love how we feel in case tomorrow never comes.

Shawn was preceded in death by her father, Daniel M. Burke.

She is survived by her husband of 25 years, David “Mac” McEntire; her mother, Barbara Tabereaux and husband, Rudy Tabereaux of Bloomington, Ind.; and her five siblings, Mark Burke of Platte City, Mo., Susan Miller of Kansas City, Mo., Amy Rohaus of Lawson, Mo., Pat Burke and Beth Burke of Excelsior Springs, Mo., along with all of their families.

Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m., Saturday, December 7, 2013, at St. Ann Catholic Church, 1503 Tracy Ave., Excelsior Springs, Mo., with services immediately following

In lieu of flowers, donations in Shawn’s name can be made to NorthCare Hospice and Palliative Care, 2800 Clay Edwards Drive, North Kansas City, MO 64116.
